MSNBC Commentator Rachael Maddow Gives Props to Florida Death Metal

When political commentators mention extreme metal on the air it's usually in reference to something tragic like a school shooting, church burning or suicide pact. But when MSNBC liberal correspondent Rachael Maddow invoked the names of Cannibal Corpse, Six Feet Under, Obituary, Death and Deicide it was mostly to take a stab at Republicans, not [...]

Beyonce May Work With Diplo, Sleigh Bells On New Album

Producer says he was 'in NYC tryin' to make tracks' for B and Bells' songwriter/guitarist.
By James Montgomery

Over the years, Diplo has worked with everyone from Thom Yorke to Spank Rock (and, of course, M.I.A.) so perhaps it should come as no surprise that, for his next collaboration, he's chosen to work with none other than Beyoncé. Oh, and electro-slammers Sleigh Bells, too. It all makes sense, in some bizarre way.

This is according to Dip himself, who posted a message — and a remix of the Sleigh Bells track "Tell 'Em" — on his blog, in which he let it be known that he, his production partner Switch and Sleigh Bells' songwriter/guitarist Derek Miller just wrapped sessions for Beyoncé's follow-up to I Am ... Sasha Fierce. He wasn't quite sure what would come of the tracks they created.

"Me and Switch was in [the] studio in NYC tryin' to make tracks with Derek and Beyoncé last week after we played her team [Sleigh Bells'] album," Diplo wrote. "Dunno if we gonna manage to finish, but [it] was good times."

At the very least, you know Bey's husband, indie-rock fan Jay-Z, is pumped by the news. Diplo is just the latest in an ever-growing list of top-flight producers who have worked with Beyoncé in recent months. There's still no release date or tentative title for her upcoming album, but she's logged studio time with the likes of S1 (he of "Power" fame), Ne-Yo, Sean Garrett and Jim Jonsin.

A spokesperson for Beyoncé did not respond to MTV News' request for comment on the Diplo tracks by press time.

Robert Pattinson Talks Kissing Kristen Stewart In His #5 MTV Moment

RPattz will debut an exclusive 'Water for Elephants' clip and answer fan questions live on Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET on MTV.com.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Larry Carroll

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson on the set of "Twilight" in 2008
Photo: MTV News

It was early April 2008, and "Twilight" hadn't yet become a global box-office phenomenon and set off an epidemic of pop-culture copycats seeking to suck up some of the franchise's supernatural lifeblood. Back then, when Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were just two up-and-coming actors making a movie for an independent studio, MTV News traveled to the film's Portland, Oregon, set to find out just what was happening with this gothic-tinged love story everyone seemed to be buzzing about.

The duo were alternately shy and unguarded, jokey and awkward, and generally far different than they are these days, with the press invading every aspect of their personal and professional lives. That's why, even years later, our first-ever "Twilight" interview remains one of our favorite RPattz moments. And as we count down the days until "MTV First: Robert Pattinson" airs next Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET, we hauled the footage from our vaults.

"Kristen's the best actress of her generation, and that's why I wanted to do this movie. I don't know why she is, but she's better than everyone else," Pattinson told us, breaking out into laughter as he kept the attention on his co-star and away from himself.

"You don't want me to talk about you?" Stewart asked, before doing just that. "I think he's really handsome."

Throughout the interview, they exchanged knowing glances, laughed at themselves and each other, and paused for long periods as they searched for the right word or anecdote. This was the "Twilight" stars, pre-media training, and it's utterly endearing. Can you imagine them now so openly discussing what it's like to smooch on camera?

"His teeth are pretty sharp," Stewart laughed. "It's great. I like it."

"Every time, I just try to kill her," Pattinson added.

"And [Bella] likes it," Stewart said. "She's a total sadomasochist, if you think about it."

Don't miss "MTV First: Robert Pattinson" this Friday at 8:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. Tune in to see RPattz introduce a new "Water for Elephants" clip, followed by a live 30-minute interview on MTV.com. Tweet questions using the hashtag #askrob to get in the conversation!

Beyonce Working With Kanye West Producer S1

'Power' producer tweets he's 'finishing up some monsters' after week in the studio with B.
By James Montgomery

Beyoncé's already taken inspiration from the likes of Michael Jackson and Lauryn Hill, hit the studio with a list of producers that includes Ne-Yo, Sean Garrett and Jim Jonsin, and now, she's hoping to capture the surge of Kanye West's "Power."

B — who's already hard at work on the follow-up to her massive I Am ... Sasha Fierce album — just wrapped a week in the studio with producer S1, the man who co-produced "Power" and has logged time with the likes of Ghostface Killah and Erykah Badu.

S1 broke the news via his Twitter account and also posted a photo of himself and B over on his official site. And from the sound of things, the sessions, which took place in New York City, were definitely eventful.

"A couple of meetings then back in the lab with Beyonce today," he wrote in one tweet. "Excited to see what we're gonna create today after last night's session.

"Not going to bed anytime soon. Beyonce got us in here working and I'm loving every bit of it," he wrote in another post. "Finishing up some monsters ... everything is sounding really great and big!"

There's still not much information about Beyoncé's new album, though in an interview with "Entertainment Tonight" last year, she said that, this time out, she's aiming to "make [her] own genre of music." In a follow-up interview with MTV News, she clarified that statement, explaining that she's "mixing every type of genre that I love" on the new album, and added, "I'm not in a box. It's not R&B. It's not typically pop. It's not rock. It's just everything I love all mixed together in my own little gumbo of music."

What do you think S1's work with Beyoncé will sound like? Tell us in the comments!

Justin Bieber's Hair Gets $40,668 At Auction

Proceeds will benefit animal-rights group the Gentle Barn Foundation.

Last week, shortly after the haircut heard 'round the world, Justin Bieber gave a lock of his famous hair to Ellen DeGeneres. The talk-show host graciously took the gift and promised to auction if off and give all the proceeds to charity.

In addition to the lock of hair, Bieber also signed a plastic box in which the hair would be kept. On Wednesday (March 2), 98 bids later, the Bieber memorabilia had sold for $40,668. All the proceeds from the hair will go to the Gentle Barn Foundation, a California-based animal-rights organization.

When Bieber appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" to give the talk-show host the hair, he reassured her that it was, in fact, his. "Yes, it's really my hair, but there's a perk: I wanted to do something good. I'm giving pieces of it to different people," he explained during the February 23 appearance. "The thing is, we're doing something special. We want you to donate it to whatever charity you want."

He also joked about what inspired him to cut off his signature locks. "I was inspired by yours," Bieber laughed. "Yeah [people were freaking out], but I was like, 'I don't really care.' "

Perez Hilton was also one of the lucky hair recipients. On February 22, the blogger wrote, "Not only did Justin Bieber get a haircut, but the teen phenom tells us that he is going to be divvying up his shorn locks to help raise money for different charities. And, he's giving Perez some of his hair to auction off! We're working it all out now, and we can't wait to tell you what good we hope to do with Bieber's hair!"

What do you think of the final price for Justin's hair? Let us know in the comments!

30 Seconds To Mars, Arcade Fire Lead MTV's Musical March Madness

Linkin Park and Foo Fighters also nab #1 seeds in our second annual tournament — vote for your favorite!
By James Montgomery

It's finally here. After 12 solid months of endless debate, speculation, open campaigning and a whole lot of accusatory e-mails from Tokio Hotel fans, at long last, we have reached the tip-off of MTV's 2011 Musical March Madness tournament. Get ready for a bit of band bracketology that pits the 64 acts that matter most in rock against one another, with ultimate glory (and a really nice trophy) on the line.

So, after a yearlong wait, which bands got their golden tickets punched and which were left hoping for a lousy NIT invite?

Check out our full Musical March Madness bracket here.

If your favorite band made the cut, it's up to you to get them through to the next round by voting for them early and often. You can do that starting Monday afternoon (March 14), when voting on first-round matchups begins on the Newsroom blog. Polls will remain open until midnight on Sunday, when we'll reveal which bands survived.

But before you vote, you should probably acquaint yourself with the full field of 64 bands, which is why we brought in CSPN sports analysts Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice (a.k.a. Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez from Cobra Starship) to break down the 2011 MMM tourney in their own, uh, unique way.

Much like the actual NCAA tournament, our Musical March Madness runs until April 5, when we'll unveil our grand champion — and it probably would help if you campaigned for your favorite band on Twitter, using the hashtag #MMM.

Of course, if a band you love didn't make the cut, we hope you'll still vote anyway. Or, at the very least, air your grievances in the comments below. And so, without further ado, let the Madness begin. Here's a look at the 64 bands competing for the 2011 MMM title:

The #1 Seeds
Foo Fighters: Time-tested progenitors of meat-and-potatoes alt rock, the Foos land the #1 seed in the equally meaty (and potato-y) Midwest region. Dormant for a few years, they've returned with Wasting Light,, a take-no-prisoners missive that, they hope, will help them recapture past glories. With their long and storied history, the Foos are sort of the Musical March Madness equivalent of UCLA, which means Dave Grohl is MMM's John Wooden. Can they add another championship banner to the rafters?

30 Seconds to Mars: Jared Leto and company grab the #1 seed in the West region thanks in no small part to the slow-burn success of their This Is War album, which, despite being released nearly 16 months ago, continues to churn out rock-radio staples. Angered by their controversial overtime loss to My Chemical Romance in last year's Sweet 16 — and buoyed by a fanatic fanbase — 30STM enter the 2011 MMM with a sizable chip on their shoulders, making them capable of beating anyone, anywhere. They're a bit of a hybrid band, adept at pounding the ball down low but more comfortable in the open court, which makes them like John Calipari's old slash-and-burn Memphis squads, or San Diego State this year. Could this be the year they take the title?

Arcade Fire: Big-boned balladeers who bullied their way to a #1 seed in the erudite East region, the Arcade Fire enter the 2011 tournament as perhaps the nation's hottest band, riding a winning streak that saw them score a #1 debut with The Suburbs and shock the world by snagging the Album of the Year Grammy from Eminem and Lady Gaga. Simply put, they've forgotten how to lose, a fact that, when coupled with their insane bench depth (since there are, like, eight people in the band), could make them the toughest out in the tourney. They most definitely run the Princeton offense, just in case you were wondering.

Linkin Park: Former bruising nu-metallers now reinvented as sonically adventurous artistes, Linkin Park nab the #1 seed in the South region (for reasons unclear, the Selection Committee decided to make them leave their West Coast enclave). Though they've certainly got the power and the championship pedigree, LP seem too frequently plagued by inconsistency — check the mixed reaction to A Thousand Suns — which is certainly a byproduct of their brave decision to remake themselves. Of course, it makes them like those old Bob Huggins-coached Cincinnati squads, or UConn this year. If they can put it all together, this is a dangerous band indeed.

Midwest
The so-called "flyover states" get a bracket positively brimming with rock-radio heavyweights bands, including the Foos, #4 the Black Keys, #5 Neon Trees, #7 Avenged Sevenfold and #9 Disturbed (broad generalizations are sort of par for the course in MMM). Last year's champs, Coheed and Cambria, end up here as a shocking #6, and they'll face a tough first-round test in #11 Crystal Bowersox. Other potential barn-burners include #4 Rise Against versus #13 Pete Wentz, and the Trees vs. #12 Patrick Stump, the results of which could lead to a second-round death match between two former Fall Out Boy mates. Not sure how Taylor Swift ended up as a #10, but she's got her work cut out for her against Avenged Sevenfold. Possible sleepers? We like #3 Vampire Weekend, a band no one is talking about, even though they probably should be.

(1) Foo Fighters vs. (16) The Damned Things
(2) The Black Keys vs. (15) Bret Michaels
(3) Vampire Weekend vs. (14) Bright Eyes
(4) Rise Against vs. (13) Pete Wentz
(5) Neon Trees vs. (12) Patrick Stump
(6) Coheed and Cambria vs. (11) Crystal Bowersox
(7) Avenged Sevenfold vs. (10) Taylor Swift
(8) Dave Matthews Band vs. (9) Disturbed

West
A bracket loaded with talent (for the second straight year, it's probably the toughest field in the entire tournament), topped by 30STM but also featuring titans like #2 Blink-182, #3 Green Day, #6 U2 and #7 the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Panic! at the Disco/ Avril Lavigne matchup has all the markings of a classic, as does the 8/9 contest, which pits Pearl Jam against Train. Oh, and don't sleep on #14 Adam Lambert, who proved in last year's tournament that his fans definitely get out and vote. We actually like him as the favorite against Green Day. Other under-the-radar acts that could do well here, like #4 Florence and the Machine and #11 Ke$ha, both of whom are looking to win one for the ladies.

(1) 30 Seconds to Mars vs. (16) Yellowcard
(2) Blink-182 vs. (15) All Time Low
(3) Green Day vs. (14) Adam Lambert
(4) Florence and the Machine vs. (13) Brandon Flowers
(5) Panic! at the Disco vs. (12) Avril Lavigne
(6) U2 vs. (11) Ke$ha
(7) Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. (10) Death Cab for Cutie
(8) Pearl Jam vs. (9) Train

East
Last year, I described the East as "the intellectual enclave," and in 2011, it still features plenty of bands that make the blogs go buzz — Arcade Fire, #2 Radiohead, #4 the Strokes, #14 Panda Bear and #15 TV on the Radio. But, for the first time, the East has also been inundated with brawling, rock-radio bruisers, including #3 My Chemical Romance (playing close to their spiritual home of New Jersey), #6 Cage the Elephant and #11 Rage Against the Machine. Who will come out on top? Our money's on MCR, who made it to the championship game last year, though #12 Phish also advanced deep last year, and you'd be foolish to overlook the power of #8 Coldplay or the chart-topping prowess of #9 Cake or #10 the Decemberists too. Also, the Arcade Fire/ Sum 41 matchup — we're dubbing it "The Battle for Canada" — should be an absolute barn-burner. Or whatever they call a barn in Canada.

(1) Arcade Fire vs. (16) Sum 41
(2) Radiohead vs. (15) TV on the Radio
(3) My Chemical Romance vs. (14) Panda Bear
(4) The Strokes vs. (13) MGMT
(5) Phoenix vs. (12) Phish
(6) Cage the Elephant vs. (11) Rage Against the Machine
(7) Owl City vs. (10) the Decemberists
(8) Coldplay vs. (9) Cake

South
An odd mix of bands actually from the South — the 4/13 matchup, which pits the Kings of Leon against Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, is basically the battle for Southern supremacy — bands who probably should be from the South (#6 Kid Rock, #3 Mumford & Sons), and bands that have absolutely no affiliation to the region whatsoever (pretty much everyone else). Still, the Selection Committee had to put them somewhere and, in doing so, has created a bushel-load of intriguing first-round matchups, including #2 Muse vs. #15 Cobra Starship, Mumford vs. #14 Tokio Hotel (our apologies in advance to Mr. Mumford and his Sons), Kid Rock vs. #11 Adele and #5 Paramore vs. #12 No Doubt. We honestly have no idea how this bracket is going to shake out, and we can't wait to watch the carnage unfold.

(1) Linkin Park vs. (16) Sleigh Bells
(2) Muse vs. (15) Cobra Starship
(3) Mumford & Sons vs. (14) Tokio Hotel
(4) Kings of Leon vs. (13) Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
(5) Paramore vs. (12) No Doubt
(6) Kid Rock vs. (11) Adele
(7) Weezer vs. (10) My Morning Jacket
(8) R.E.M. vs. (9) Hinder

Did your favorites make the cut? Sound off about the bracket in the comments below!

MTV's Musical March Madness Tournament is back! Voting on all first-round matchups begins this afternoon on the Newsroom blog and continues until Sunday. All winners are determined by your votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it'll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM — but get ready, it's gonna be a war.

Foo Fighters 'Back And Forth' Doc To Be Screened In 80 Theaters In April

Band's new 'Rope' video premieres Thursday on MTV and MTV.com.
By Gil Kaufman

In a few weeks, you can roll down to your local multiplex to see a screening of the Foo Fighters' new documentary, "Foo Fighters: Back and Forth," directed by Oscar winner James Moll ("The Last Days"). The movie charts the entire career arc of the band, from the cassette demos leader Dave Grohl recorded during his time as Nirvana's drummer through their rise to the top of the rock world. You can meanwhile whet your whistle with the premiere of the Foo Fighters' new "Rope" video at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on Thursday (March 10) on MTV and MTV.com (followed by premieres at 8 p.m. ET on MTV Hits, mtvU and VH1.com).

The band will perform a live show after the April 5 screening of the movie at more than 80 U.S. theaters as part of the promotional lead-up to the April 12 release of their upcoming seventh studio album, Wasting Light. The movie will also air on April 8 on VH1, VH1 Classic and Palladia.

The new album represents the Foos' first full-length collaboration with famed producer Butch Vig, the man behind Nirvana's legendary Nevermind album. It also features a collaboration with Grohl's former Nirvana bandmate, bassist Krist Novoselic.

To celebrate the release of the video on Thursday, the Foo Fighters are set to invade the home of a superfan in the Los Angeles area, along with MTV News' James Montgomery, to introduce the clip live and answer fans' questions. Immediately following the on-air premiere, the band will stay on for an additional Q&A session live-streamed on MTV.com. Fans can submit questions through MTV.com, Twitter (@MTVNews using hashtag #askfoos) or on MTV's Facebook page.

The Foos are also coming to the Woodies for the first time. The legendary group will perform "Rope" during the 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards show, airing live from Austin, Texas, on March 16 at midnight on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU.

The Woodies will be hosted by "Community" funnyman Donald Glover and feature sets by Wiz Khalifa, Sleigh Bells, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All and Two Door Cinema Club. Among the presenters at the show will be Matt & Kim, Lupe Fiasco, Dev, Chiddy Bang, Skylar Grey and "My Life as Liz" star Liz Lee. MNDR will serve as the show's house DJ.

The Foos' documentary will premiere as part of the SXSW film festival the night before the Woodies. The 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards will air live on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU on Wednesday, March 16, at midnight (ET/PT) from the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. For more information — and to vote for the winner of the "Breaking Woodie" award — check out Woodies.MTV.com.

New 'Super 8' Trailer's Five Key Moments

We take a look at the most fascinating scenes featured in the new promo clip for the upcoming J.J. Abrams-directed adventure film.
By Eric Ditzian

Joel Courtney, Ryan Lee, and Riley Griffiths
Photo: Paramount Pictures

"What the hell?" says a boy at the very end of the first full-length trailer for "Super 8," neatly summarizing our own thoughts about the footage from the mysterious action-adventure film: Um, what exactly did we just see?

Well, what we saw, first off, was an incredibly effective promo clip courtesy of director J.J. Abrams and executive producer Steven Spielberg. It managed to maintain the spirit of a teaser trailer — withholding far more information than is ever unleashed — while expanding our understanding of, and getting us seriously more excited about, what we'll see in the flick when it hits theaters on June 10. Here are our picks for the new trailer's five key moments:

What Kind of Military Trucks Are Those?
In we'd already seen the fiery train crash that unleashes some sort of very angry, possible very alien creature. So what we're focused on here is what's new, like those military trucks rolling through town with red cargo bins. What kind of military vehicles haul cargo like that? We see them pull right up to the train's wreckage, so we're guessing whatever is in them is important. As an Air Force leader, played by Noah Emmerich, says to Kyle Chandler's local policeman, "I understand you have concerns about our cargo," before telling him there's nothing to worry about. Right ...

9/11 ... for Dogs?
Though the film is set in 1979, there's no mistaking the allusion to September 11, 2001, in this shot of missing-dog posters. Apparently, all the dogs hightailed it out of town after the train crash. Why is it that animals always seem to grasp potential sci-fi terror before humans? And what ever happened to man's best friend, after all?

That Looks Like It Hurts
So dogs and people start to go missing. Things, no doubt, start to go from bad to worse. Just look at this bloody-faced guy who has a gun in his hand, a terrified look in his eyes, and one word of instruction: "Go!" This raises a question about "Super 8" that we've had for a while. Early reports seemed to suggest that this movie would be more of an alien-invasion film in the vein of "Cloverfield." But most of the footage we've seen thus far gives an impression of something more akin to "E.T." So which is it? Or is it both? In the new trailer, we definitely get a sense of a Spielberg-like focus on family-oriented fare, yet things clearly get very intense and very dangerous at some point.

Boom! Boom!
Throughout the trailer, we've seen how this alien presence can somehow manipulate electricity and exert a telekinetic power on objects. Here we see a prime example of that ability, as the local electronics store goes boom. At others points, power lines explode, a bus tips over, and, well, it's all leading to...

Look, Up in the Sky
The most eye-popping scene in the entire trailer comes at nearly the very end. Main Street is trashed, the citizenry is freaked out and the military is nowhere to be seen as vehicles rise up into the air. The kids (portrayed by Joel Courtney and Elle Fanning) — both looking very much like characters from "E.T.," he Elliot, she Gertie — take in the craziness. Like in "E.T.," it seems that only the children fully understand the implications of what's actually going on. For example: No one believes a man in the hospital, for instance, who claims to have seen the creature ... except the boy. As he tells the man, "I believe you."

What are your favorite moments in the new "Super 8" teaser? Tell us in the comments.

Check out everything we've got on "Super 8."

'Red Riding Hood' Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

We've been following the fairytale reinvention since Catherine Hardwicke chose it as her first post-'Twilight' project.
By Eric Ditzian

Amanda Seyfried in "Red Riding Hood"
Photo: Warner Bros.

While Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart continued on with the franchise Catherine Hardwicke launched on the big screen, the director left the "Twilight" series behind in 2008, bouncing from one project to another until finally committing to one: the "Twilight"-esque "Red Riding Hood."

For a while, she'd been attached to Summit Entertainment's "If I Stay" and had been eyeing both an adaptation of "Hamlet" and a teen-focused fantasy pic called "Maximum Ride." But in the end, Hardwicke settled on "Red Riding Hood," with Amanda Seyfried in the title role, as her first post-"Twilight" project.

Now, more than two years after the debut of the film that made stars out of Pattinson, Stewart and — yes, god bless those ever-faithful Twi-fans — Hardwicke herself, "Red Riding Hood" is finally here. So let's flash back and bring you up to speed with an MTV News cheat sheet: everything you need to know about the new movie.

Leaving Forks, Finding Medieval Times
Hardwicke left "Twilight" in December of '08 and was promptly replaced by Chris Weitz for "New Moon." She held out hope of convincing RPattz or KStew to star in "If I Stay" or "Maximum Ride" but ultimately signed on to what was then called "The Girl With the Red Riding Hood," a project Leonardo DiCaprio was producing as a gothic reimagining of the familiar fairy tale.

Seyfried entered talks for the film in early 2010. Julie Christie, Gary Oldman and Shiloh Fernandez, as Seyfried's love interest, eventually came aboard as well. "I'm always kind of careful about what I choose," Seyfried explained to MTV News. "I had known [Hardwicke] kind of a little bit before, when I was dating Emile Hirsch, and I had been to her house before. That was years ago. And when I had met with her again, she talked about this movie. I completely fell in love with her idea and trusted her from that moment on, and I'm like, 'Yeah, I'm down.' "

A Fairy Tale for the "Twilight" Set?
The "Red Riding Hood" trailer arrived last fall, and after checking it out, we had only one question: Was the movie just "Twilight" with a cape? There certainly seemed to be a lot of similarities, from the werewolf to the overall gothic vibe. But in a recent interview, Seyfried rejected the comparison.

"It's a bummer that that's what's happening," Seyfried told us. "I mean, it does surround a girl coming of age in a love triangle, but that's a lot of movies. The truth is, it's an entirely different story."

Yet even Hardwicke, it seemed, found herself mixed up a bit. "We'd make jokes about her calling us Kristen and Rob and Taylor [Lautner]," Seyfried laughed.

Regardless of any confusion, though, Seyfried maintained that "Red Riding Hood" is an utterly original creation, neither a "Twilight" remake nor a strict retelling of the original fairy tale. As she put it in a separate interview, "Catherine Hardwicke has just completely turned this story into something edgy and gothic and dark, and she's clearly somebody that's very capable of turning something, everything into an extraordinary world, as we've seen before."

Check out everything we've got on "Red Riding Hood."

Zach Galifianakis Scores With Second Appearance On 'Saturday Night Live'

The idiosyncratic comic sings 'Annie,' shaves head, and lampoons 'The Hangover' on long running sketch comedy show.
By Shawn Adler

Zach Galifianakis on "Saturday Night Live"
Photo: NBC

After a well-received performance from host Miley Cyrus last week that contained funny, if fairly straightforward and typical sketches, Saturday Night Live wasted no time in racing back to its anti-comedy roots, thanks to an appearance last night (March 12) from the improvisational and idiosyncratic Zach Galifianakis, who was hosting the program for the second time.

Galifianakis set the episode's tone early, delivering a monologue chock full of non-sequiturs ("In April, I'll be babysitting my sister's kids," he said. "Via Skype."), before plunging with gusto into a lip-synched performance of the song "Tomorrow" from "Annie."

Adorned in the character's iconic short red dress, Galifianakis pranced and skipped across the stage while pretending to sing at the top of his lungs, simultaneously pulling back cue cards to goad the audience in a bizarre cross between Andy Kaufman's "Mighty Mouse" and Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues."

"Clap if you endorse medical marijuana," one cue card read. "I smoke so much pot sometimes I forget to smoke it," read another. "Dukakis 2012," read the last.

From there, Galifianakis appeared as an audience member vocally disappointed that he was at a taping of "The Talk" rather than his preferred "The View," and an airhorn blowing comic in a pre-taped bit titled "The Original Kings of Catchphrase Comedy Tour."

But while he also took turns alternately playing the Captain of the Titanic and a Canadian talk show host with a penchant for long vowels, the show's highlight might have been when Galifianakis appeared on the long running skit "Scared Straight" alongside Kenan Thompson.

Wheeled in on a gurney and dressed to look like Hannibal Lector, Galifianakis and Thompson played words like musical notes, turning names and titles like Helena Bonham Carter, Colin Firth and "Home Alone" into borderline filthy and scatological puns.

"And there won't be a baby and a papoose, it'll be a baby's arm in your caboose," Galifianakis punned, referencing his star turn in "The Hangover."

Galifianakis also appeared on the digital short, which revolved around the comic interviewing children to be his new personal assistant.

The musical guest was Jessie J, who brought along B.o.B to perform "Price Tag" during the show's musical interlude.

What did you think of Galifianakis's performance on "Saturday Night Live?" Which skit was the funniest? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Daniel Radcliffe Has Acting 'Chops,' Says Co-Star Gary Oldman

The elder actor admires Radcliffe's plan to work beyond 'Harry Potter.'
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Daniel Radcliffe and Gary Oldman in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"
Photo: Warner Bros.

Daniel Radcliffe and Gary Oldman share a special sort of bond, one forged during the filming of 2004's "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" and then revisited during the more recent "Deathly Hallows" shoot.

"He's always somebody who — just from being around, I don't know whether it is from some kind of quite pure and childish desire to want to impress him or out of the fact that he just gets something out of me — having him around for some reason on the fifth film was such an amazing thing for me as an actor, and hopefully he'll have that effect again," Radcliffe told us back in the summer of 2009.

And, in turn, the impression Radcliffe left on Oldman lasts to this day and had the elder actor expressing his admiration for the boy wizard when he spoke to MTV News while promoting "Red Riding Hood."

"As the books have got darker and as the books have got more complex, he's in a different league," Oldman said. "Who would have known that Emma [Watson], Rupert [Grint] and Daniel, at 11, would have had the chops to take it through to the end?'

Yet Oldman's respect for Radcliffe extends beyond the "Potter" universe and to his other acting pursuits, like a risky stage play that required him to appear in the nude. "I don't know many 17, 18-year-olds that would have done 'Equus.' And he's now singing and dancing on Broadway. He pops up out of these holes. And he's got f----you money, so he can do what he wants. And [he's] dedicated, takes it very seriously and works very hard."

Oldman said that Radcliffe's turn in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," which officially opens on Broadway in late March, is all part of a plan to challenge himself and successfully vie for roles with other actors on a level, non-"Potter"-assisted playing field.

"When I heard that he was doing the dancing, going into training, he said, 'Look, I am not going to rest on my laurels and come out and think I'm going to get stuff because I was Harry Potter,' " Oldman said. " 'Once "Harry Potter" finishes, I'm in the arena with all those other actors who are going up for the job, who can dance and who can sing, and I have to compete with them.' "

Ke$ha has made a name for herself as a party girl who makes party songs. But maybe you find the choice tracks on her debut, Animal, and the follow-up, Cannibal, not quite up to snuff for your dance-floor needs. And maybe that's why the singer has decided to release her first ever remix album, I Am the Dance Commander + I Command You to Dance: The Remix Album, on March 22.

For the album, Ke$ha hooked up with a number of dance DJs and producers, as well as a few notable guests. The track listing includes: "Blow" (Cirkut Remix), "The Sleazy Remix" (which includes an appearance by Andre 3000), "Tik Tok Untold Remix," "F--- Him He's a DJ" (live version), "Animal Switch Remix," "Your Love Is My Drug" Dave Audé club remix, "We R Who We R" Fred Falke club remix, "Take It Off" Billboard remix, "Tik Tok" Chuck Buckett's Veruca Salt remix and her track with 3OH!3, "Blah Blah Blah" DJ Skeet Skeet radio remix.

In addition to the new music, Ke$ha is also set to release the music video for her latest single, "Blow." She tweeted about filming it in late January. On Tuesday, the singer shared that she saw some footage from the video, writing, "Just saw the final cut of my new video for BLOW all I can say is HOT DAMN."

Currently, Ke$ha is on the road for her Get $leazy Tour, which she kicked off last week in Portland, Oregon. She's set to wrap up her tour in Las Vegas on May 7.

'Prometheus' Star Noomi Rapace Talks Character Details, 'Alien' Connection

Rapace says her character is 'very much her own,' despite sharing similarities to Sigourney Weaver's Ripley.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Despite spin that "Prometheus," Ridley Scott's upcoming sci-fi flick that returns the director to his "Alien" roots, is not a prequel to the franchise he helped launch in 1979, some of the stars of the new film apparently beg to differ. Actor Michael Fassbender told us last month that the new movie shares "a definite connecting vein" with the previous films.

And now "Prometheus" co-star Noomi Rapace has seconded that assessment. When MTV News recently asked the Swedish actress about the definitive "Alien" connection, she answered, simply, "Yeah, yeah."

Yet Rapace emphasized that her character, a scientist named Elizabeth Shaw, is not some knock off of Sigourney Weaver's Ripley — the take-no-crap hero of the original "Alien" movies.

"She's definitely her own," Rapace said of Shaw. "She's a scientist and she's very bright and she's a believer. They have some similarities, but she's very much her own. I don't think people will compare [her] so much to Ripley when they see her. Ripley was a hero for me."

MTV News spoke with Rapace in January on the set of "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," a film that will mark a sort of Hollywood coming-out party for the star of the Swedish-language "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" films. After finishing up work on "Sherlock," Rapace was anticipating beginning "Prometheus" in March for a shoot that could run into the early fall, ahead of a March 9, 2012, theatrical release. Before then, however, she and Scott have work to do in simply developing the character of Shaw.

"I have many ideas and he has many ideas, and now we try to find her," the actress told us. "I will step into her shoes in March and be here for six months, so it's quite a long shoot."

Check out everything we've got on "Prometheus."

Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Other Stars Make Forbes' Top-Earning Of 2010 List

Taylor Swift, Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus also made the magazine's top 20 list of Hollywood moneymakers.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Beyoncé

On the East Coast, revenue streams are slowly rising as banks are still cratering and trying to recover from the recession. But out West, money ain't a thing, as Jermaine Dupri and Jay-Z once rapped.

Forbes has released their list of Hollywood's 20 Highest Earners of 2010, with Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus among those rubbing elbows with the likes of power players like Oprah Winfrey.

The venerable talk-show host topped the list with a whopping $315 million haul. Winfrey's earnings were generated for the most part by her multimedia deals, which include a syndication deal for her TV show, a magazine and her soon-to-be-launched network.

"Avatar" creator James Cameron came in second, more than $100 million behind Winfrey, with a tally of $210 million. Director and playwright Tyler Perry ($125 million), blockbuster movie producer Michael Bay ($120 million) and golfer Tiger Woods ($105 million) rounded out the top five.

Beyoncé was the only pop star to break the top 10. The "Single Ladies" superstar landed at #9, sandwiched between George Lucas and Dr. Phil. Mrs. Carter, whose hubby, Jay-Z, was named Hip-Hop's Cash King by Forbes in August with a tally of $63 million, pulled down $87 million over the past 12 months.

The blond-haired trio of Britney Spears ($64 million), Lady Gaga ($62 million) and Madonna ($58 million) made their mark on the list at numbers 13, 14 and 15, respectively.

Pop tarts Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift capped the list. The young stars placed at 18 and 19 on the list, with Disney star Cyrus pocketing $48 million, and country singer Swift depositing $45 million into her bank account.

Hollywood's 20 highest-earning men and women of 2010, according to Forbes:

1. Oprah Winfrey, $315 million
2. James Cameron, $210 million
3. Tyler Perry, $125 million
4. Michael Bay, $120 million
5. Tiger Woods, $105 million
6. Jerry Bruckheimer, $100 million
7. Steven Spielberg, $100 million
8. George Lucas, $95 million
9. Beyoncé, $87 million
10. Dr. Phil, $80 million
11. Simon Cowell, $80 million
12. Jerry Seinfeld, $75 million
13. Britney Spears, $64 million
14. Lady Gaga, $62 million
15. Madonna, $58 million
16. Sandra Bullock, $56 million
17. Ellen DeGeneres, $55 million
18. Miley Cyrus, $48 million
19. Taylor Swift, $45 million

Britney Spears' 'Till The World Ends' Hits Web

Femme Fatale's second single was penned by Ke$ha.
By Jocelyn Vena

Photo: Jive

Britney Spears' new single, "Till the World Ends," sounds poised to be a club smash. The Ke$ha-written, Dr. Luke/Max Martin-produced track was posted by Perez Hilton on Thursday afternoon (March 3), after speculation earlier in the day that the song would hit radio next week.

"Till the World Ends" is a swirling, "beat the beat" track, ready for late nights spent "dancing till the world ends" as she sings on the fast-paced party jam. "This kitten got your tongue tied in knots I see/ Spit it out 'cause I'm dying for company," a confident Spears purrs.

As the song slows for a moment — during a break before she moves her way to the chorus — she sings, "I can't take it take it take no more/ Never felt like felt like this before/ Come on get me get me on the floor/ DJ, what you what you waiting for?" she teases.

The beat chugs in the background as synths play with Spears' sex-kitten delivery of lines like "Watch me move/ When I lose, when I lose it hard/ Get you off with a touch/ Dancing in the dark.

"See the sunlight/ We ain't stopping/ Keep on dancing till the world ends/ If you feel it/ Let it happen/ Keep on dancing till the world ends," she sings as the song breaks down, fading out for a brief moment (revealing her signature breathiness), and then coming back in as she repeats those final lines again to close the song.

Ke$ha recently dished about the track to Spin.com, noting that it is about the power of an artist performing a great gig. "That song is me imagining her and any female musician touring the world," she said. "You know, when you go out, and you're having an amazing, magical night and you don't want to go to sleep and you want it to last until the world ends."

"Till the World Ends" is the second single from Femme Fatale, set to drop March 29. Its lead single, "Hold It Against Me," was an equally club-friendly jam by Luke and Martin, who are overseeing production on the album.

Michael Jackson Estate Rakes In $310 Million To Date

Singer left behind more than $400 million in debt.

Between album sales, movie profits, licensing arrangements and lucrative deals for Cirque du Soleil shows, the estate of late King of Pop Michael Jackson has raked in more than $300 million since the singer's shocking death in June 2009.

According to TMZ, legal documents released on Thursday reveal that executors of MJ's estate have managed to make a major dent in the more than $400 million in debt that Jackson owed at the time of his death.

The first accounting from the executors shows that they have already spent around $159 million paying back various debts, income taxes and other expenses, which include providing support for the pop star's mother, Katherine Jackson, as well as his three young children.

"Although there remain unresolved creditor claims, pending litigation and additional challenging business, tax and legal issues, and the estate is not yet in a condition to be closed, the executors have made substantial progress in reducing the estate's debt," the documents state, according to a Reuters report. Two of Jackson's longtime confidants, attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain, were named as administrators in a will sign by the pop icon.

In addition to paying to make "substantial improvements" to the Jackson family's Havenhurst estate in Encino, California, the executors also spent an undetermined amount of money on "last illness and funeral and memorial service expenses." Those costs included a $900,000 payment to the Forest Lawn Memorial cemetery where Jackson is buried and $35,000 on expenses described as "costume for memorial."

TMZ reported that not only did the famously cash-strapped Jackson have more than $400 million in debt, but his estate also owed more than $40 million to concert promoter AEG tied to the scuttled This Is It Tour, for which MJ was rehearsing when he died unexpectedly. They've also paid $27.2 million in taxes and $4 million in mortgage payments on Jackson's properties.

Despite the solid sales of the Michael album and millions of units of the singer's back catalog being sold, as well as the box office of the "This Is It" movie and DVD sales, the estate is not nearly out of the woods. TMZ noted that the administrators have received more than 65 creditors' claims, some of which are subject to "extremely high" interest rates, and there are several outstanding lawsuits against the estate in several countries.

Charlie Sheen's Whirlwind 24 Hours

Charlie Sheen's Whirlwind 24 Hours

The Charlie Sheen crazy train just keeps chugging along. Within the past 24 hours, the troubled actor has been extremely busy -- kicking off more legal drama, announcing his live stage tour and more!

Read on for the latest, bizarre updates in the Sheen sa:

Police Raided His Home
Late Thursday, cops showed up at Sheen's Beverly Hills home "after receiving a call earlier today that Sheen threatened to harm himself with a firearm," according to TMZ. They found an antique rifle and some bullets but were not trying to put him involuntarily in a psychiatric hospital, the site said. The Los Angeles Police Department said they were there to investigate a possible temporary restraining order violation, according to People.com. The standard order forbids the restrained person from having firearms. Sheen later twittered, "#fastball; the LAPD were AWESOME. Absolute pros! they can protect and serve this Warlock anytime!!! c"

He Reached a Custody Agreement
Sheen and ex Brooke Mueller reached a custody agreement over their 2-year-old twins, Bob and Max, "that resolves their differences," their attorneys said Thursday. "For the benefit of the children, the terms of their agreement will not be disclosed. They ask the public for privacy on this matter." The agreement follows a restraining order Mueller filed against Sheen last week that forbade Sheen from communicating with her or the kids, after she said he made death threats against her, according to People.com.

He Announced His Stage Tour
The actor announced on his Twitter page that he will stage a live tour with dates so far scheduled in Detroit (April 2) and Chicago (April 3). Tickets for the show, which he is calling, "Fastball; My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat Is Not an Option" go on sale Saturday. He says of the performances, "Will there be surprises? Will there be guests? Will there be mayhem? Will you ask questions? Will you laugh? Will you scream? Will you know the truth? WILL THERE BE MORE?!?! This IS where you will hear the REAL story from the Warlock. Bring it. I dare you to keep up with me."

He Filed a Lawsuit
Sheen on Thursday filed a $100 million lawsuit against the producers and creators of his hit TV show Two and a Half Men, and said he shouldn't have been fired from the show. But creator Chuck Lorre quickly responded, dismissing Sheen's claims as "recklessly false.

Jon Cryer Fired Back
Sheen's former costar Jon Cryer responded to his name-calling, joking Thursday on Conan O'Brien's show that he really was a "troll." "To avoid ignorance and bullying, I've had to hide the fact that I'm a troll. You have no idea how much time and money I've spent on electrolysis and hair dye and reconstructive surgery so I can look like this [pointing to himself], instead of this," he said as an image of Cryer with pink Troll doll hair and eyes flashed on the screen. The day before, Sheen sort-of apologized to Cryer for lashing out against him and calling him a "troll" for what he claimed was a lack of support. "It's a little bit of a half-apology. An apol.," Sheen said.
